Pride and Prejudice

The award-winning 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Regency romance, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

If you fancy another Austen classic, there’s also the 2008 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility on BBC iPlayer with Hattie Morahan, Charity Wakefield, David Morrissey, and Dominic Cooper.

Merlin

Fantasy period drama based on the King Arthur legend. Young wizard Merlin (Colin Morgan), arrives in Camelot to find magic outlawed, its practice punishable by death.

Last Tango in Halifax

For another heart-warming drama, head to the Scottish highlands with Monarch of the Glen. Based on Compton Mackenzie’s novels, Archie MacDonald becomes the laird of a huge, decaying family estate in the Cairngorms.

Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators

Quirky, crime-fighting fun with Mark Benton and Jo Joyner.

The series follows an unlikely pair of private investigators, hardboiled ex-cop Frank Hathaway (Benton), and warm-hearted ex-hairdresser Lu Shakespeare (Joyner), as they work the cobbled streets of Stratford-upon-Avon, solving thrilling cases and murders most foul.

Wolf Hall

Beyond Paradise

An idyllic Death in Paradise spin-off set against the backdrops of Devon and Cornwall. DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and his fiancée Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) head to the not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott as they embark on their new life.

Ludwig

Cryptic comedy drama with David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin. When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s (David Mitchell) identical twin, James, disappears off the face of the earth, John takes over his brother’s identity in a quest to discover his whereabouts. John has never married, never had a family and never really ventured further than his own front door. Without a computer, mobile phone or even a television, he lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living, under the nom-de-plume of ‘Ludwig’.

However, filling the shoes of your identical twin is one thing – when your twin also happens to be a successful DCI leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team the stakes are much higher. John may be a master of all things cryptic, but can he crack the biggest puzzle of his life?

Ghosts

A cash-strapped young couple inherit a rickety country mansion, only to find it teeming with needy ghosts. Grown-up comedy from the Horrible Histories team, starring writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, with Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.

Detectorists

The story follows the relationship between two friends who share a passion for metal detecting. When Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones) are together, they’re like an old married couple. They gripe at each other, but there is a true bond underneath. Each has their own slightly dysfunctional lives but together they dream of finding a priceless Saxon hoard that will cement their place in detecting history. Helping them along the way is a delightfully quirky crowd of characters who are drawn to this all-absorbing hobby.

We Might Regret This

Centring around a new relationship, an impending blended family and an intense female friendship, the series follows Freya (Kyla Harris) a 30-something Canadian artist and tetraplegic. She’s moved to London for Abe (Darren Boyd), a 50-something straight-laced lawyer who thinks he’s the old dog that can learn new tricks.

Freya and Abe’s relationship is a high-speed romance which sees Abe inviting Freya to move into his house before she’s even seen upstairs. Because of Freya’s disability, living together also includes personal assistants (PAs), who are always there – a third person in earshot for every romantic moment and domestic screaming match.

After failing to find the right person for this more than intimate role, Freya invites chaotic and impulsive best friend Jo (Elena Saurel) to take the job. What could go wrong?

Dreaming Whilst Black

Critically acclaimed half-hour dramedy written by and starring Adjani Salmon.

Loosely inspired by real-life events, Dreaming Whilst Black tells the story of Kwabena (Adjani Salmon), an aspiring filmmaker stuck in a dead-end recruitment job who takes the first step toward achieving his dream.Along the way, he is quickly confronted with the tribulations of balancing finances, love, and his own sense of reality.

Upstart Crow

Comedy about William Shakespeare (David Mitchell) as he starts to make a name for himself in London while also trying to be a good husband and father for his family in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Originally commissioned as part of the BBC’s Shakespeare Festival 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of the writer’s death, the series explores Shakespeare’s world and uncovers the surprising stories behind Will’s plays.
