Garden of Evil (1954)
Garden of Evil is a 1954 American Western film shot in CinemaScope and directed by Henry Hathaway. The story follows three somewhat shady 19th-century soldiers of fortune—Gary Cooper as an ex-lawman, Richard Widmark as a gambler, and Cameron Mitchell as a bounty hunter—who, along with Vicente (Víctor Manuel Mendoza), are unexpectedly hired by a woman (Susan Hayward) to rescue her husband (Hugh Marlowe). Rita Moreno makes an appearance early on as a Mexican cantina singer and dancer. As the first outdoor film made using the new CinemaScope widescreen process, Hathaway took full advantage of the breathtaking Mexican landscapes to highlight the format’s impressive scope.
