State Secret (1950)
State Secret is a 1950 British drama thriller film directed by Sidney Gilliat and starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Jack Hawkins, Glynis Johns, Olga Lowe and Herbert Lom. It was made at Isleworth Studios with Italian location shooting in Trento and the Dolomites. It was released in the United States under the title The Great Manhunt.
In a Balkan country, intelligence head Col. Galcon (Jack Hawkins) forces vacationing eminent American brain surgeon John Marlowe (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.). to treat the nation’s leader, who is secretly suffering from a serious brain trauma. After Marlowe operates, the dictator initially recovers — but when he abruptly dies, Marlowe finds his life in jeopardy. Desperate to escape, Marlowe’s only hope for help rests with a ambiguous spy (Herbert Lom) and a cabaret singer (Glynis Johns).
