A Martian probe-rocket containing two engineers is buried underneath rubble when a bridge collapses.
Weakened by a storm, a bridge cannot take the weight of a rocket being transported by road to its launch site. The rocket falls into the river with two engineers aboard and the impact starts the automatic countdown system. Thunderbird 4 must clear the debris before the rocket motors fire.
