Kiryu, or MechaGodzilla, contains the skeleton of the 1954 Godzilla from its Timeline. The bones have the spirit or soul of the first Godzilla still attached to them! The films producer, and director, both agree that the first Godzilla is the father of the current Godzilla! It may not be canon, but the idea was there, from 2 of the most important people working of the series.
