Red Eye

ITV LogoRed Eye”, an electrifying TV series, takes you on an adrenaline-pumping ride set between a red-eye flight from London to Beijing, the vibrant streets of London, and the nerve-wracking corridors of power within Whitehall. This six-part thrilling roller-coaster ride promises to have you on the edge of your seat.

The Genesis of “Red Eye”

The series was conceived by acclaimed writer Peter A Dowling, known for his screenplays for “Black and Blue” and “Flightplan”. Commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, “Red Eye” is a notable departure from Dowling’s previous work, offering a unique blend of high-octane drama and international intrigue.

Dowling’s unique storytelling style, characterised by his knack for creating tension-filled narratives within confined locations, is on full display in “Red Eye”. The idea for the show came about when Dowling and his collaborators at Bad Wolf decided to craft a modern-day Agatha Christie-style thriller set on a plane.

The Cast Unveiled

The cast line-up of “Red Eye” is nothing short of impressive. The show features Jing Lusi, Richard Armitage, Lesley Sharp, and Jemma Moore in pivotal roles. Lusi plays DC Hana Li, a no-nonsense London police officer caught up in a menacing conspiracy. Armitage takes on the role of Dr Matthew Nolan, a respected medical doctor accused of murder. Sharp and Moore portray MI5’s Madeline Delaney and journalist Jess Li respectively, both of whom find themselves embroiled in the same dangerous conspiracy.

Each actor brings a unique dynamic to their character, adding depth and complexity to the overarching storyline. Their performances, combined with Dowling’s gripping script, promise to make “Red Eye” an unmissable series.

The Plot Thickens

At the heart of “Red Eye” is a chilling narrative that weaves together the lives of three women – Hana Li, Jess Li, and Madeline Delaney – who are thrust into a life-threatening conspiracy. Dr Matthew Nolan, after attending a medical conference in Beijing and narrowly escaping death in a car crash, is arrested for murder upon his return to London.

Hana Li finds herself accompanying Nolan back to Beijing against her will. However, her resentment towards the assignment and Nolan soon shifts to suspicion and confusion as unexpected deaths occur onboard. Meanwhile, Jess Li, Hana’s half-sister, begins her investigation into Nolan’s extradition, landing herself in the crosshairs of a dangerous assassin.

The Power Play Unveiled

As the plot progresses, we are taken to Thames House, where Madeline Delaney, the head of MI5, risks her career to help Hana and Nolan stay alive and expose the international conspiracy. The conspiracy seemingly implicates both China and people within her own government, turning “Red Eye” into a nail-biting political thriller.

The series masterfully blends drama, suspense, and action, with each episode building on the last to create a thoroughly engaging viewing experience.

Behind the Scenes

The series is directed by Kieron Hawkes, known for his work on “Fortitude” and “Power Book IV”. The production team includes executive producers Julie Gardner, Lachlan MacKinnon, and Peter A Dowling, with Kristian Dench serving as the producer.
