Radiance’s care and consideration for selecting, restoring and supporting classic films on blu-ray is the exact opposite of the careless, slapdash attitude that most streaming platforms provide; it’s a pleasure to unpack each film they supply. Their World Noir Vol 1 package was a sell-out, and they’re back with three more classic crime movies from three different countries in World Noir Vol 2. I’ll get myself in gear to review Germany entry Black Gravel and Japan’s Cruel Gun Story, but let’s dive straight into French noir with the rather luridly titled Symphony for a Massacre. Massacres were somewhat more genteel affairs in 1960s’ France, and this is a classy, grounded crime thriller that’s somewhere between Rififi, Get Carter and Reservoir Dogs; it’s got a familiar Pandora’s box theme that dates back to Macbeth and beyond; once the bloodshed starts, it’s hard to put a stop to the violence before it gets back to the person who started it….
